Querini Stampalia #2, oil on plaster, 14 x 14 x 1.5  inches, 2021

Artist Statement

Materiality and process are important components for me to build object/paintings that tell stories through their surfaces. I think of lost photos, historic architecture, and the landscape as witnesses to history—the presence of absence embedded in layers. Those things are metaphors for personal loss and history—links between the public and the personal. I try to conjure that evanescence in the images I collect and transform.

My methodology combines a high tech-low tech process of photo, electronic imaging, painting, and carpentry. The imagery I frame is of the periphery, I add the foreground by hand after in the studio. Sanded surfaces blur the initial image to engage looking by emphasizing how we see rather than what we see. In this way, perception itself is the subject.
